Job description
Step into a hands‑on Theatre Health Care Assistant role at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, based in Gateshead (NE9). You will support patients through every stage of their peri‑operative journey in a busy theatre department of 12 theatres covering orthopaedics, general surgery and the regional gynae‑oncology centre, including laparoscopic and robotic theatres. Under the supervision of registered practitioners you’ll provide direct patient care, assist the multi‑disciplinary team with clinical tasks, help maintain and safely operate theatre equipment, rotate stock, transport specimens and support WHO briefs and handovers. The role is Band 3 (salary £24,937–£26,598 pa), permanent and full‑time, and involves shift work including nights, late shifts and weekends. Please note this post is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and we are unable to obtain a Certificate of Sponsorship (work permit) for this vacancy.
This opportunity suits compassionate carers — particularly women jobseekers and those with experience or a keen interest in peri‑operative care — who are confident with practical, often physically demanding work (standing for long periods, moving trolleys and occasional exposure to bodily fluids) and who value patient dignity and clear communication. Gateshead offers a supportive workplace culture with staff networks (including a Women’s Network), a Balance staff wellbeing programme and clear values (ICORE) that shape everyday practice. You’ll need basic qualifications in English and maths (GCSE or equivalent) and a willingness to learn theatre skills; peri‑operative experience is desirable but not essential.
