Coventry and Rugby GP Alliance is seeking an Admiral Nurse to provide person-centred and relationship-centred dementia care in a flexible hybrid working environment. The role focuses on supporting families affected by dementia through expert guidance, specialized assessments, and practical solutions. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting bio-psychosocial assessments and developing individualized care plans.
- Providing emotional support and psychosocial interventions to enhance the well-being of individuals with dementia and their families.
- Educating and training staff on best practices in dementia care.
- Collaborating with health, social, and voluntary services to ensure coordinated care and aid in care transitions.
- Advocating for the rights and needs of people with dementia and their carers, while ensuring compliance with relevant legal frameworks.
Additionally, the Admiral Nurse will engage in clinical supervision, professional development, and contribute to the continuous improvement of dementia care practices through evaluation and audit initiatives. This role requires maintaining accurate clinical records and participating in training to enhance staff competencies around dementia care.

The primary focus of the Admiral Nurse role is to deliver person-centred and relationship-centred dementia care within Coventry & Rugby to improve the experience of carers/families affected by dementia
Dementia UK defines this as the person living with dementia and others who may be carers or family members Admiral Nurses work together with families to provide support, expert guidance & practical solutions.
This may include:
- Specialist bio-psychosocial assessment and support for people with dementia and families with complex needs
- Facilitation of education and training for staff in the delivery of evidence-based dementia care
- Support with policy development and quality improvements in relation to dementia care
- Consultancy to other health and social care professionals regarding dementia
About us
Clinical
- Advise other professionals on the care of people with dementia and their carers/families with complex care needs, from peri-diagnosis to post bereavement support.
- Provide specialist nursing assessment, using the Admiral Nurse Assessment Framework for carers/families affected by dementia (within service spec)
- Support identification and management of co morbidities and frailty for people with dementia and their carers/families.
- Develop and/or support, in partnership with other professionals, person-centred care plans for people with dementia including positive risk management
- Deliver relationship and family-centred approaches to care, which meet the needs of people with dementia, carers/families and staff.
- Provide a range of evidence based psychosocial interventions and emotional support to promote mental/physical health and wellbeing for people with dementia and their carers/families.
- Support people with dementia, carers/families and staff to understand and respond to changes in behaviour and relationships as a result of dementia.
- Ensure that all legal requirements are considered and adhered to where appropriate to patients and carer’s, including Mental Capacity Act 2005, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) 20& Safeguarding Adults 2
- Act as an advocate for people with dementia and their carers/families to promote their rights and best interests.
- Participate in case conferences and best interest meetings when required.
- Work collaboratively with health, social and voluntary sector services to achieve coordinated care.
- Manage care transitions and support people with dementia and their carers/families in order to reduce frequency of admissions and length of stay.
- Ensure that care is delivered in accordance with relevant local and national guidelines and all relevant Coventry & Rugby GP Alliance policies.
- Recognise the limits of own competency and professional boundaries and make appropriate and timely referrals to other services where required.
- Ensure that clinical records are up to date and maintained and stored appropriately in line with local and national guidance
Education & Support
- Support innovative dementia training and education to staff within the host organisation at all levels, to improve staff attitudes, knowledge, skills and confidence, in line with best practice and guidance.
- Participate in and/or support formal training events promoting best practice in dementia care and disseminating Admiral Nursing work.
- Provide advice on the delivery of evidence based best practice in dementia care
- Act as a clinical role model to others, including student nurses, and mentoring other staff as required.
- Support the development and delivery of work streams as part of the host organisation’s Dementia Strategy.
- Work in partnership with colleagues to provide support and information to families, including advance care planning, best interest decisions and end of life care.
- Work with key local and national stakeholders to develop more integrated care pathways and holistic models of care, through dissemination of specialist skills and knowledge.
Evaluation and Audit
- Support the audit and evaluation of quality improvements and initiatives aimed at improving the delivery of dementia care within Coventry & Rugby GP Alliance
- Actively participate in the collection of quantitative and qualitative data to support the evaluation and audit of the Admiral Nurse Service.
- Maintain clinical records using the chosen data recording system and provide verbal and written feedback appropriately and as required
- Ensure recorded information and data recorded is relevant, accurate, and complete and captured in a timely manner.
- Be fully aware of and comply with the Data Protection Act (1998) and Caldicott principles in relation to protecting the confidentiality of patient and service-user information and enabling appropriate information-sharing.
Professional
- To attend and actively participate in monthly practice development days, clinical supervision, and continuing professional development, including the Admiral Nurse Competency module and the Admiral Nurse Forum, as supported by Dementia UK.
- To develop own competence through use of the Admiral Nurse Competency Framework, portfolio development, and ‘PebblePad’ (e-portfolio)
- To maintain professional registration in line with NMC guidance, including re -validation
- Contribute to the development of policies, procedures and protocols relevant to dementia and Admiral Nursing within Coventry & Rugby GP Alliance.
- Ensure compliance with Trust clinical governance requirements.
- Participate in clinical supervision / mentoring within Coventry & Rugby GP Alliance where required.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of evidence-based recommendations on supporting people with dementia and their carers/families.
- Be aware of current research related to dementia treatments/interventions and support people with dementia/carers/families to get involved in research where appropriate.
