This Consultant Ophthalmologist role (interest in uveitis) is based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne (NE1 4LP) with The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It supports the Trust’s tertiary uveitis service and is a proleptic appointment as the lead specialist prepares to retire—an excellent chance to step into a senior clinical and service-development role. Clinical duties include managing complex uveitis and medical retina cases, laser and intravitreal injections, virtual imaging review, some general clinics and emergency on-call work (1:21 rota). Clinics and surgery may take place at outreach sites and the nearby Newcastle Westgate Cataract Centre. The post is permanent, full-time, and offers a competitive consultant salary band (£109,725–£145,478). Candidates should hold FRCOphth or equivalent, full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register within six months of the AAC; those from medical ophthalmology routes are also welcomed.

The Trust is flexible-working friendly and actively supports research, teaching and leadership—there is encouragement to lead or join clinical trials and to develop services alongside colleagues in rheumatology and other specialties. Practical benefits of the role include a manageable on-call frequency, strong multidisciplinary support, opportunities for career progression and a package of staff benefits. DBS checks and UK professional registration are required; sponsorship applications will be considered.
